John Melvyn Scohy

May 29, 1942 — June 5, 2026

John Melvyn Scohy was born on May 29, 1942 and embarked on his next adventure

84 years and one week later on June 5, 2026.

John had a favorite t-shirt that states: “That’s what I do. I pet cats. I play with trains and I know things.” This tells you a lot about who John was. He had a great sense of humor and a Jeopardy mind. He even earned the distinction of becoming a Knight of the Golden Horseshoe, when he was in 8th grade. He loved trains and animals, especially his cats, Prince and Jasmine.

John was born in Clarksburg, WV to John Lewis and Kathryn (Potts) Scohy. He grew up in Sistersville, WV graduating from Sistersville High School in 1960 where he played football and was student body president. While attending Abilene Christian University in Texas where he and his first and second wife (long story) Barb welcomed their first son, John Mark, into the world, he was offered an opportunity to work in a paint factory. This seemingly random opportunity sent him down a path that defined his career choices for the rest of his life. John was a paint chemist and after various twists and turns returned to West Virginia where he welcomed his second son, Stephen Lewis. He raised his family in Vienna, West Virginia where he was involved as a little league coach and served as deacon and Sunday school teacher at Vienna Baptist Church. He was involved with model railroading for decades.

On June 8, 1991 John married Annette and took on the challenge of becoming a wonderful step-dad to Molly and Gretchen.

John retired from VanGuard Paints and Finishes in 2004 where he was not only a chemist, but vice president and quite a salesman as well. He traveled all over and if you met him, you remembered him. He had quite a gift of gab and never forgot anything, ever. Years after retiring he continued as a consultant, solving problems and conferring with other chemists and clients and his boss and friend, Jeff Hollister.

John is survived by his wife, Annette and children: Stephen and his wife Anne,Molly Fiedler and her partner, Rob Graham, Gretchen Jackson and her husband, Dan, grandchildren: Brody Alexander, David Scohy and his wife, Amanda, Jessica Scohy and her wife, Tatiyana, Danielle Scohy and her fiancée, Brad Smith, Stephen Patrick Scohy, Miles Jackson and his partner, Lake, Bram Jackson and his wife, West, and Alex Hay and his fiancée, Isabelle Deem, as well as, 2 great-grandchildren and another on the way.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved son, John Mark, and a daughter, who died at birth.

There will be a celebration of life planned in the future. In lieu of flowers…John would want you to celebrate every moment of your own life with those you love.

Myers Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
