Stephen Allen Space

Stephen Allen Space, 72, of Paden City, WV, took his first breath on January 18, 1954, and took his last breath on September 24, 2026, at home, with family by his side.

Steve was born to the late Harold and Alice Space. He was also preceded in death by his sister, René MacElhose, and his father-in-law, Byron Anderson, who considered Steve as a son.

From an early age, Steve understood that this life was temporary and that we are simply passing through on a journey toward something eternal. His faith was not simply something he believed, it was the foundation upon which he built his life. He knew God from an early age and spent his life striving to serve Him, share His Word, and point others toward His mercy, grace, love, and forgiveness.

Steve was a graduate of Paden City High School and West Liberty State College. During his high school years, he earned the nickname “Pilgrim,” a name that would follow him throughout his life. He carried his Bible in his shirt pocket, even to basketball games, and wore shoes that reminded his friends of those worn by the pilgrims. What began as a high school nickname became a fitting description of the man he would become.

Throughout his life, Steve faithfully preached the Gospel and taught Bible classes in small congregations. He had a genuine desire for others to know the hope he found in Christ.

Steve retired from Bayer Chemical after many years of service. Outside of work, he enjoyed trout fishing and the game of golf. He could proudly boast of having three holes-in-one!

More than anything, Steve cherished his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 50 years, Debby Space, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, faith, memories, and family. He is also survived by his sister, Melinda (Jim) Riggenbach; son, Jason (Paula) Space, and daughter, Trista (Ethan) Hulsey and his five grandchildren, Ciara (Collin) Doughty, Audrey Space, Camden Space, Jocelyn Hulsey, and Avery Hulsey.

His family will remember him not only as a husband, father, and grandfather, but as a man of deep conviction who sought to live what he believed. His legacy will live on through the family he loved, the people he encouraged, the Scriptures he taught, and the faith he shared.

“And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Sistersville, WV, on Saturday, October 10, 2026, 1:00 PM .

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Pine Street Church family, friends, and neighbors for the tremendous love, prayers, kindness, and care shown to Steve and his family. A special thank you extended to Brenda and Myshna Napier for their loving help and support in caring for Steve, and to Carley Potts, Dr. Blum, and Amedisys Hospice Care for their compassionate and exceptional care during his final days.

Steve’s journey on this earth has come to an end, but the faith he carried with him throughout that journey remains in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

He was a pilgrim here. Now he is home.
