November 26, 1920 - April 18, 2011
Margaret Lucille Mercer Bard Margaret L. Bard passed away April 18, 2011 in Methodist hospital in Houston Texas at eight fifty AM. She had moved to Houston about 5 years ago to live close to her daughter, Margaret A. Bard Johnson, because her health had deteriorated beyond her ability to care for herself. Margaret was superseded in death by her husband, Harry E. Bard, in June of 1976, and her two brothers - Carl Mercer, who passed away in April 1994 and Paul Mercer, who passed away in 1996. Margaret is survived by her oldest child, Robert D. Bard, OD, an optometric physician in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex area of Texas, and her daughter, Margaret A. Johnson of Houston, Texas. She had six grandchildren - Robert Michael Bard, Kevin Scott Bard, Graham David Johnson, Derrick Kurt Johnson, Hannah Lucille Johnson, Zoe Michal Johnson, and four great grandchildren - Logan Scott Bard, MacKenzie Elana Bard, Blake Taylor Perez, and Jonathan James Meza. Margaret was born and raised in Sistersville, WV, Tyler County on November 26, 1920, the daughter of Anna and Vernon Mercer. During World War II, Margaret worked in Akron, Ohio assembling B-29 airplanes for the war effort. She was one of the original “Rosie the Riveters” - the ladies who changed the way women worked and raised families in the USA. In 1954, Margaret opened her own beauty shop in her house at 117 Urban Street, Sistersville, WV. She worked there until 1997 when she retired. Other than a few short times of renting in other locations, the house on Urban Street was the only home in which she resided. Margaret had many loyal customers in her beauty shop because of her caring that they looked their best and she cared for these women as friends. Many of her customers were older than she and they passed away while she was working. Margaret went to the funeral home to do their hair one last time before they were buried. Margaret - mother, grandmother and great-grandmother - will be sorely missed by all who loved her, but she is finally free of the excruciating pain of osteoporosis. There will be a memorial service for Margaret on June 25, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Myers Funeral Home. Family will receive friends starting at noon.
